Kevin Cowan has dedicated his legal career to helping others obtain justice. Born and raised in a blue-collar neighborhood of Chicago, he knew early on he wanted to become a lawyer and move west. Kevin is the oldest of three children. His parents often chastised him for defending his younger siblings. Says Kevin, “I can still hear my mom saying, ‘What are you? Her lawyer?’”
He was very successful throughout school. He skipped a grade in elementary school, attended gifted classes through high school, and eventually got a scholarship to attend North Central College just outside Chicago. “My parents never got to go to college. I knew it was my ticket to a better life,” he says. He graduated NCC with honors, packed up his car, and drove to San Jose to attend University of San Jose School of Law, from which he graduated in 2009.
Kevin was President of the National Lawyers Guild at USD. He held a position on the Graduate Student Council, the Presidential Advisory Board, and has been a member of the San Jose Bar Association for a number of years. At USD he won the Shirko Family Scholarship, and held a permanent position as a staff writer for the USD Law newspaper. He was involved in mock trial, theater, and was a DJ on the radio for 4 years on 89.1 FM in Chicago.
These days Kevin spends his time in the illustrious company of Mr. Goldshmidt, fighting for the little guy. The injured guy. The wronged guy. “Nothing makes me feel better than the handshake as I hand over a check to a client,” he says. “No one asks to get injured, and when I see a positive outcome come from less than perfect circumstances, and I sense the gratitude from the client that I helped make everything right again…it keeps me fighting.”
When he is not battling insurance companies, Kevin plays guitar, works on his poor Spanish, bums around Pacific Beach, and plays with his 2 year old son.
